Who are you?
My name is Aurélien Mazurie. Born in France, I'm 28, and obtained a Ph.D. in molecular and computational biology in 2005. I'm currently working as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, following a previous post-doc at the Center for the Study of Biological Complexity at Richmond, VA, in the United States.
So you're a scientist? What are you working on?
Roughly speaking, my goal is to study the cell (and if possible, higher level of organisation like tissues, organisms, populations and ... ecosystems) as a entangled set of interacting components, in order to find underlying logic and structures.
This kind of approach is called 'systems-' or 'holistic biology', in opposition to the 'standard' reductionnist approach mainly used in this field (where complex systems are studied by splitting them in smaller, simpler components, for instance small sets of genes or proteins in molecular biology). Due to the amount and complexity of data hence handled and the need for high-level correlation-finding algorithms to extract knowledge from them, systems biology can't be considered without its sister, the bioinformatics.
You can access to a list of my current and past research projects here, and consult my resume here.
What does 'bioinformatics' means?
Practically speaking, it's the use of computer science tools (computers and algorithms) to study biological problems.
So you're a biologist or a computer scientist?
Well, I'm primarily a biologist, more exactly a molecular biologist. But due to my skills in computer science and the experience gained by collaborating with computer scientists I achieved a Ph.D. (and actually still undergo research projects) at the interface of these two disciplines, and now consider myself as a 'bioinformatician', even if this term is too new to be well defined (a computer scientist with skills in molecular biology will certainly be called bioinformatician too).
I found a lot of mistakes in your english. Is it normal?
'Normal' is not the good word; I will say, 'excusable'. One of the goal of doing a postdoc was to improve my english. So it will improve eventually!
How can I contact you?
That's easy; here you have a list of physical and electronical coordinates to reach me wherever I can be.
